How To Make This Recipe

There’s a reason I use this recipe more often than boxed mix- it’s just SO dang easy!

  1. Dump all dry ingredients into a medium bowl and whisk well.
  2. Pour dry ingredients into an airtight container and store in a cool, dry place until ready to use.

When you’re ready to put your cake mix to use,

  1. Mix dry ingredients with wet ingredients until combined.
  2. Pour batter into a greased 9×13 inch pan or divide into cupcake liners.
  3. Bake the cake at 350 degrees F for 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick in the middle comes out clean. Bake cupcakes for 15-20 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  4. Allow the cake or cupcakes to cool completely before topping them with your favorite frosting!

Why I Love Homemade Cake Mix

Simple Pantry Ingredients- This Homemade Cake Mix calls for only FIVE ingredients! All of which are pantry staples. It doesn’t get easier than this!

Great For Gifting- I LOVE to give a homemade gift around the holidays or even as a “just because” gift! Store this recipe in a jar and wrap a cute ribbon around it with written instructions on how to use it, and you have a simple, made-from-scratch gift that anybody can enjoy! Who doesn’t love the gift of cake!?

A Great Substitute- This recipe is great to use in place of boxed cake mix! My favorite recipes to substitute for are Orange Creamsicle Poke Cake and Lemon Poke Cake!

Easily Customizable- This recipe makes a great vanilla cake base, but you can get creative with it! Some of my favorite add-ins are:

  • Sprinkles
  • Cocoa Powder
  • Fruit Zest (lemon, orange, grapefruit)
  • Chocolate Chips
  • Nuts
  • Different Extracts (maple, peppermint, coconut, almond, etc)

Tips & Tricks

  • Use ingredients that are fresh and not expired. Most people don’t realize that baking powder and baking soda are less effective after a certain period of time, so check those expiration dates!
  • Sift your dry ingredients together for a smooth, clump-free batter.
  • Store your Homemade Cake Mix in an air-tight container for best results. If you aren’t storing the cake mix in an air-tight container, I recommend making the cake mix when you’re ready to use it instead of ahead of time.
  • Mix up the flavors and mix-ins! Using a different flavor extract, adding colorful sprinkles, or adding chopped nuts or chocolate makes for a great surprise.

With just a few simple ingredients and a little bit of preparation, you can enjoy the satisfaction of homemade baking without the hassle. So why not give it a try and elevate your baking game today? Your taste buds will thank you!
